LaPointe Pier Repairs - GCT Vanterm

Legacy Environmental on behalf of Global Container Terminals Inc. proposes to conduct maintenance and structural rehabilitation of the LaPointe Pier located at GCT Vanterm in Burrard Inlet, Vancouver. The works are required to address localized failure and ongoing corrosion of sheet piles along the pier, including approximately 40 metres of collapsed sheet piles that have reduced berth depth and compromised structural integrity. The objective is to restore berth functionality, maintain safe operations, and stabilize existing infrastructure without expanding the footprint of the pier.

Proposed in-water works include removal of collapsed sheet piles from the seabed, installation of approximately 75 square metres of gabion baskets along the western pier face, and placement of approximately 490 square metres of riprap at the northeast corner of the structure. Additional activities may include re-securing existing sheet piles with anchor rods and steel strapping, installation of corrosion protection anodes, and underwater welding and drilling associated with these repairs.

Construction will be undertaken using divers working from the pier and/or a barge-mounted crane, with supporting equipment such as hydraulic tools, welding equipment, and material placement from barge or land-based staging. Works will proceed in phases including demolition/removal, inspection, installation of stabilization measures, and armouring. In-water works are anticipated to occur over approximately 10 weeks.
