YYJ BEE-KIND Pollinator Garden

Project Type: YYJ BEE-KIND Pollinator Garden

Proponent: Victoria Airport Authority (VAA)

Authority: Victoria Airport Authority (VAA)

Location: Victoria International Airport (YYJ) – Sidney BC

Schedule: May 2022 – October 2022

The project involves the construction of a pollinator habitat garden on airport property.

The proposed site for the pollinator garden was previously a Garry Oak ecosystem and exists on the wet meadow spectrum with clay dominated soil and full sun exposure.

The total site size is 1,125 m2.

Activities include tilling of existing soils across the site to a maximum depth of 20cm and the addition of topsoil and compost to enrich the soil for planting.  Options for pathways will include chip, gravel or screenings.  Landscape features such as rocks and woody debris will be installed with other hard features such as picnic tables/seating and edging materials.  Machinery will be used for the tilling and the placement of materials during regular daytime hours.  There will be minimal impact to traffic on Willingdon Road.

An estimated 1,200-1,500 seedlings (300-350m2) will be planted along with a meadow (approximately 400m2) that will be seeded.
