Steveston Paramount Wharf 403 Reconstruction

Small Craft Harbours (SCH) is undertaking a project to reconstruct timber wharf 403 at Steveston Harbour (Paramount Site on west side of Nelson Pond).  The wharf provides loading and offloading for fishing vessels and serves as a foundation for building infrastructure critical to fishing operations.

The wharf (including adjacent paved areas) has suffered degradation with age and is past its useful life.  The substructure of timber bearing piles, caps and stringers have deteriorated with progressive rot and biological damage, and are past the point where further repairs can be effective.  In addition, portions of the wharf were damaged in a 2017 fire causing safety concerns and resulting in significant operational and financial impacts. The wharf is partially unusable and restricted from use, requiring barricades and displacement of services and users.

This project will reconstruct the deteriorated wharf 403 and associated backshore by constructing a sheet pile wall around the footprint and back filling with clean fill and re-surfacing.  Completion of this work will ensure that this loading area continues to be safe and accessible to the large commercial fishing fleet serviced at Steveston Harbour.  Work is anticipated to begin as early as January 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2023.
