DP World Nanaimo Duke Point Terminal Expansion

DP World Nanaimo Inc. (DP World) is proposing to expand the Duke Point Terminal in Nanaimo, British Columbia (BC). DP World Nanaimo is the operating tenant of the terminal, located within and under the jurisdiction of the Nanaimo Port Authority (NPA). The Duke Point Terminal is operated by DP World Nanaimo under lease to NPA and is used as a multi-purpose cargo terminal and for storing and shipping forest products and containers.
DP World Nanaimo has made application to NPA and is proposing to expand the Duke Point Terminal and the berth to facilitate increased trade both domestically and internationally with intent to provide efficient terminal access for simultaneous berthing for container vessels and barges.
The site is located on the east side of Duke Point at 750 Jackson Road, Nanaimo, BC, approximately one km south of the Duke Point BC Ferry Terminal. It is located on the marine foreshore on the east side of Duke Point. Daholt Road borders the site to the south with access to the terminal and an adjacent industrial site to the south of the road. An inactive industrial site is located immediately north of the terminal site. Jackson Road borders the terminal property to the west.
The existing terminal was originally constructed in 1982 as a single berth facility with 182 metres (m) of straight vessel berth, a northern dolphin structure to berth barges, with a low tide berth depth of 13.5 m. The facility itself includes 6.07 ha (15 acres) of paved storage area within the larger property. This existing terminal is currently in use by marine cargo and container vessels and barges.
The objective of this project is to lengthen the existing berth face from 182 m to 325 m and use the two recently relocated 80 foot gauge fully electric quay cranes to service marine container vessels and barges simultaneously. The existing diesel-powered quay crane will be decommissioned and removed. To accommodate the anticipated future use of the site, the proposed terminal expansion will:
•    Enlarge and lengthen the existing berth face from 182 m to 325 m including securing dolphins;
•    Allow loading and unloading of container vessels and barges along the lengthened and existing berth;
•    Expand the paved storage area from 6.07 ha (15 acres) to 12.1 ha (30 acres) within the existing property;
•    Improve utilities and security servicing the site;
•    Expand and replace existing quay crane rail system to accommodate the 2 - 80 foot gauge quay cranes presently stored on site;
•    Upgrade the fendering system for large deep-sea vessel mooring;
•    Construct a new truck gate;
•    Design and build new administrative and maintenance buildings, lumber and pulp warehouses.
