WCMRC Oil Spill Response Facility at Nanaimo Harbour

Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) is proposing to construct and operate a spill response base (the "Project") at the Nanaimo Assembly Wharves property at 50 Port Drive in Nanaimo. The Project will serve as a marine response center where staff and equipment are housed for deployment during a spill response event.  The Project includes modifications to near shore upland and foreshore to support a 1520 m2 building, equipment storage yard and marine facilities for response vessels.

The overall Project site footprint will be approximately 1.3 ha, and utilize approximately 0.9 ha of existing paved upland and 0.4 ha of industrial foreshore. Construction activities in the upland will include excavations and trenching for building foundations and civil services, utility upgrades and relocations, building construction and associated works, drainage modifications, installing an oil/water separator, paving, fencing and LED lighting upgrades. Foreshore construction works will include installation of 27 steel pilings from a barge, a precast retaining wall, gangway and floats, water, sanitary, power utilities and LED lighting. Installation of the 70 m retaining wall will involve the removal of existing timber cribbing retaining wall as required, pulling back existing rip rap, installation of the precast concrete panels on a gravel base and placement of approximately 270 m3 of rip rap and 100m3 of filter rock.
