Timber harvesting on Boothroyld IR 2- 5- 5A- 5C- 5D- 6- 6A, Chaumox 11, Speyum 3

Environmental Assessment Description – Salvage of Burnt Timber on Reserve

The assessment will examine the potential environmental effects associated with the salvage of fire-damaged timber on reserve lands. The proposed project includes the harvesting and removal of burnt or fire-weakened trees with commercial value, as well as associated activities required to safely complete the salvage operation, including the use or improvement of existing access, forestry operations, and management of harvest residues.

The assessment will consider potential effects of the project on valued environmental and cultural components, including soils, water resources, wildlife habitat, vegetation, species at risk, cultural values, and the traditional use of lands. Particular consideration will be given to potential risks associated with salvage harvesting in wildfire-affected areas, including soil disturbance, erosion and sedimentation, impacts to watercourses, and effects on sensitive habitats.

Mitigation measures will be identified and implemented to minimize potential adverse effects from the project. These measures may include maintaining riparian protection areas, managing surface water drainage, stabilizing disturbed soils, protecting sensitive habitats, avoiding areas of environmental or cultural concern where identified, and completing site restoration activities where required.

The assessment will also consider potential cumulative effects associated with previous forest harvesting activities, natural disturbances, wildfire impacts, and other existing or proposed activities within the surrounding area. The results of the assessment will help determine the measures required to ensure the salvage of burnt timber is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner while supporting wildfire risk reduction, recovery of forest resources, and ecosystem restoration.
