South Beach Trail Revitalization – Trail Re-alignment and Reconstruction

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve is proposing to complete revitalization efforts to the South Beach Trail. Portions of this trail are experiencing significant erosion and trail structures (e.g. wood box culverts) have reached the end of their service life and require replacement. The proposed scope of work includes the relocation of an approximately 300 m stretch of trail adjacent to the Kwisitis Visitor Centre, widening of the existing trail alignment by approximately 50cm to facilitate ATV access for Indigenous elders and individuals with varying abilities, removal/replacement of existing trail structures, and replacement of the existing trail tread material. Project activities examined will include localized vegetation removal and ground disturbance within the existing trail alignment and the proposed re-alignment path, the removal of all asphalt and replacement with gravel, installation of water-management structures, and restoration activities.

Latest update

September 25, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until October 25, 2026 respecting that determination.
