Camp Queen Elizabeth Dining Hall and Wellness Cabin Improvement Project, Beausoleil Island

The Dining Hall and Wellness Centre at Camp Queen Elizabeth on Beausoleil Island have M. lucifugus accessing the walls and ceilings of structures while staff and campers are present. Occupancy has been confirmed by a trained professional through the presence of bat guano and urine. The structures are assumed to be used as maternity roosts as individuals have been heard throughout the active season which is consistent with maternity roosting periods. Occupancy of M. lucifugus has been confirmed throughout the camp with passive acoustic monitoring.

Due to reasons of public health and safety, a designated contractor will seal off external bat-sized entry points on the siding, eaves and external structures of the buildings. One-way doors will be installed at entry points, and caulking, mesh, siding and flashing may be replaced, as required. The Camp will install and maintain 4-chambered bat houses in consultation with Parks Canada resource conservation team in an effort to provide excluded bats with alternative roosting locations in subsequent years.
