Bruce Peninsula National Park Hydro Corridor Maintenance

The hydro corridor that runs approximately 3.5 km of power line from Cameron Lake to the Cyprus Lake campground needs vegetation clearing and removal. While some vegetation clearing has been performed in recent years in response to storm-related damages, most of the corridor remains unmaintained for several years. Recent severe weather events- including high winds, ice, and snowstorms have caused trees and branches to fall onto utility lines, resulting in service disruptions to power, water, and communication systems within the park. Furthermore, vegetation in contact with electrical wires poses a significant risk of forest fires. This goal of this project is to remove shrubs, trees, and overhanging branches along the corridor and improve access to the hydro corridor to facilitate future maintenance work. This work is essential to safeguard the integrity of the infrastructure, prevent future damages, and ensure uninterrupted service. By addressing the overgrown vegetation and reducing access issues to the hydro corridor, the park aims to significantly mitigate risks and enhance the overall reliability of the electrical line system. The work is tentatively planned for the fall of 2026 and will be a multi-year project working within the appropriate timing windows to minimize impacts on the habitat and associated species of conservation concern. The first phase of the project will address immediate concerns related to vegetation posing the highest risk of forest fires.

Latest update

September 2, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until October 2, 2026 respecting that determination.
