Bayfield Harbour - North and South Pier Minor Works and Shore Protection

Bayfield Harbour is located on the east shore of Lake Huron, approximately 30 km north of Grand Bend, Ontario. The harbour includes both public and private berthing (over 500 berths in total), as well as two walking piers. Recent high water and storms have damaged the steel curb rail on the north pier and eroded portions of the shore on the south pier/beach. In addition, the north pier, west of the channel entrance, is unprotected and showing signs of deterioration.

Accordingly, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is planning to undertake minor repair work and shore protection on the north and south piers (outer). The work includes:

North Pier:

  • Removal and disposal of existing damaged steel curb rail and pile cap (portion of existing).
  • Installation of new steel curb rail, anchored into existing concrete deck
  • Placement of armour stone along the pier (north side of channel, west of the entrance to ensure stability of the existing structure (July 5, 2021: Removed from scope of project)

South Pier:

  • Pumping high slump concrete below existing concrete deck (in eroded area).
  • Placement of armour stone in the repaired area to protect the structure and shoreline from future erosion.
