Burlington Lift Bridge Deck Replacement

The proposed project will replace the existing lift span deck including the stringers and deck barriers, lead remediation where required, install a new expansion joint at the north end of the bridge between the tower and lift span, and widen the sidewalk.  As part of this project, the approach span bridges on the north and south ends of the bridge will also be rehabilitated, including the removal of the concrete decks and existing asphalt and curbs.

This proposed work is needed so that the bridge can remain operational and safe for the next 50 years, and to eliminate the costly and disruptive emergency welding program that has been in effect since 2004, and install Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) compliant railings and anchorage systems and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety across the bridge.

The lift span deck replacement will be conducted during the Burlington Canal's winter shutdown from January to late March 2023.  Since the bridge is not expected to operate during the winter closure, commercial boats will not be affected by construction on the lift span.  An opening will be available for emergency boats.  Further, the works will be completed under full vehicular and pedestrian/cyclist closure.
