Well Replacements 2024

Two wells require replacement in Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP). Two new wells will be drilled in close proximity to an older existing well at the same sites, and the old wells will be decommissioned by backfilling with regulated material and capping. Each new well will be approximately 8 inches in diameter and 200 feet deep. Excavation of 1-foot-wide trenches is required to connect the wells to their associated buildings. There is potential for adverse environmental effects to species at risk, and adverse effects to cultural resources, and the interests of Indigenous Partners of RNUP. Eastern Milksnakes (Lampropeltis triangulum) (Schedule 1, Special Concern, SARA) are known to hibernate in the foundation of one of the buildings associated with a well replacement, and the project site is located on a mowed office building lawn area situated within Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) (Schedule 1, Endangered, SARA) Critical Habitat. Careful monitoring and project timing will mitigate the potential adverse effects to species at risk. Further investigation and engagement beyond the scope of a Pre-approved Routine Impact Assessment is required to determine how the potential negative effects to cultural resources and Indigenous Partners can be mitigated.
