Field Electrical Centres

This project involves the following:

As part of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority's (GTAA's) Toronto Pearson Airport Longterm Investment in Facilities & Terminals (LIFT) Program, five new Field Electrical Centers (FEC) and associated infrastructure are proposed to be construction on the Airfield.

These FEC buildings will be at five separate locations on the existing airfield. The function of the FEC's is to house electrical and telecommunication equipment that will power and control the airfield runways, taxiways, other related lighting, navigational aids, and associated monitoring and control systems to ensure the safe and effective operation of the airfield. These new FEC buildings, and their associated electrical and telecommunication duct banks, will replace and modernize the existing system currently operational at the airport. Demolition of existing FECs will be undertaken as the new FECs are placed into operation. Each FEC will be a single-story structure with a below grade vault for cable entry. Each FEC will be connected by a series of new medium-voltage (MV) and telecommunication duct banks that will run throughout the airfield and feed each of the five runways, all taxiways, and other associated infrastructure.

Each FEC structure will contain Constant Current Regulators (CCRs), UPS / battery backup equipment, generator including fuel tank, switchgear rooms, load modules, transformers, air handling units, washrooms, janitor's room, storage, and other electrical and telecommunications control and monitoring equipment. External to each building, there will be a new vehicle access road, parking, fire hydrants, landscaping, and associated stormwater infrastructure. The sites will be serviced with appropriate utilities.

Several sustainability best practices will be incorporated into the projects design and implementation for the wider Toronto Pearson Airport Longterm Investment in Facilities & Terminals (LIFT) Program.
