Impeed the Reed

The non-native common reed (Phragmites australis) has been called "Canada's worst invasive plant" (Scrivener, 2012). The goal of this project is to "Impede the Reed" by eradicating non-native Phragmites by mechanical method and re-establishing natural shorelines within Georgian Bay Islands National Park (GBINP). GBINP has experienced a 250% growth of this invader since 2010 resulting in a declining trend in the Ecological Integrity(EI) of the park (Roy, 2016). The current level of invasion has been estimated to have altered 20% of Beausoleil Island shoreline (approximately 7.8km and 19Ha) which is worrisome for GBINP's wetlands, critical habitat for many species at risk. The project actions will have a direct benefit to the wetland and shoreline indicators of the Ecological Integrity of the park, including wetlands and turtles at risk.
