Exterior Abatement and Soil Remediation at the Kagawong Lighthouse, Kagawong, Ontario

The site is located in the village of Kagawong, Township of Billings, Manitoulin Island, on the shores of Lake Huron (Mudge Bay), Ontario.  Legally known as Part  Lot 28, concession 16, Township of Billings, Manitoulin Island, District of Algoma.  The Project consists of exterior and interior lead paint and asbestos abatement and a soil remediation program which includes the following activities:

  • Removal of exterior asbestos containing materials
  • Removal of exterior lead based paint
  • Repainting the Kagawong Lighthouse
  • Excavation will be completed using hand shovelling and potentially a small backhoe
  • Soil will be transported for treatment or disposal at an appropriately licensed site
  • Clean fill, composed of coarse sand, will be placed by hand or by a small backhoe, and rolled for compaction
  • Revegetate the topsoil with sod or grass seed
  • The work is anticipated to start in July 2021 and be completed by December 2022. 

    The contaminated soil area in the Project Area is approximately 46 m3 of metals impacted soil in the vicinity of the lighthouse and approximately 99 m3 of metals impacted soil on adjacent lands.
