Replacement of Drinking Water Pipes in the Block subdivision in the Village at Garden River First Nation
This is a non-designated project on federal lands or outside Canada. The listed authorities are responsible for the project assessment.
The proposed project has the primary objective to improve reliability of the water delivery system to the final subdivision in the community that needs to be upgraded, while reducing annual maintenance cost and providing improved safety.
This will include:
- Reducing the number of water line breakages in the community
- Reducing the number of people/homes impacted in the event of a future incident
- Increasing safety to the community with fire hydrants
The scope of project works includes:
- Replacing 5 km of existing 2" underground pipe that was installed in the 1960's with 6" pipe to reduce system failures and reduce the burden on the pumping station;
- Installing isolation valves to manipulate water flow direction, and isolate water main breaks (2 valves provided at "tee" intersections, and 3 valves at "cross" intersections for isolation purposes), as well as approximately 300 metre intervals on straight runs to minimize damage should future breaks occur;
- Increasing pipe diameter to improve flow, increase pressure stabilization, & reduce pumping station burden;
- Installing 12 fire hydrants, spaced 120-150 m. apart; and
- Increasing cover of water mains to 2.4 m due to harsh winter climate.
Construction will utilize standard open-cut construction techniques, to be confirmed with detailed engineering.
