Septic System Replacements

Parks Canada is responsible for overseeing the management and maintenance of tenanted properties, including the associated assets, within Rouge National Urban Park. The purpose of this project is to decommission existing residential sewage disposal systems and install new residential sewage disposal systems (septic systems) to prevent potential risk to ground water and human health. In order to install the new systems, pits will be excavated to contain the septic tanks and pump tanks (approximately 2.0 m below ground level). Trenches will be excavated from the dwelling to the septic tank and from the pump tank to the leaching bed to contain the underground pipe system, and the area under the leaching beds will be excavated to various depths depending on the site. Each of these excavations will be larger than the area of the final septic system to allow room for installation. During this work, a temporary silt fence barrier will be installed at each site when necessary, equipment will be driven in the area around the excavations, and topsoil will be stockpiled on site. The new septic systems will be in compliance with the 2012 Ontario Building Code, as amended. These septic systems will have an expected minimum service life of 25 years provided trees, shrubs, and vegetation with deep roots are controlled.
