Squirrel Island Range Towers Replacement Project

CCG Squirrel Island range towers are at the end of their life cycle and are required to be replaced.

Squirrel Island Front range tower is a 30' steel lattice tower with a light and a dayboard mounted onto it. The tower is located on a small manmade island in the St. Clair River and is only accessible vie vessel or helicopter. The replacement of this tower will include the construction of a new concrete foundation with piles, the hoisting of a new steel lattice tower, additional rip-rap placed as needed, and the re-routing of the existing walkway to the new tower location. Construction access will be via vessel/barge.

Squirrel Island Rear range tower is an 80' steel lattice tower with a light and dayboard mounted onto it. The tower is located on the mainland of Squirrel Island which lies upon the Walpole Island First Nation Territory. The tower is surrounded by marsh land and is only accessible viz helicopter. For the purpose of this project, a temporary access road will be constructed through the marshland to the construction site. The replacement of this tower will include the construction of a new concrete foundation with piles, the hoisting of a new steel lattice tower, and a new walkway from the existing helipad to the new tower location.

Through the project contract, the following environmental considerations will be made:
- Soil remediation around tower site that is known to be contaminated.
- Species at risk mitigation, as determined by a hired biologist through the contract.
- Construction sites will be limited to the smallest footprint feasible for this project.
