HMCS Hunter Embankment Erosion Repair

The outer limits of the harbour are protected by a harbour wall of varying construction, along the northern and eastern limits. The southern limit (approximately 100 metres) however, is only partially protected (approximately 70 metres) by an armour stone wall. The remaining portion of the southern limit (the southeast corner) consists of an outcrop of land made-up primarily of what appears to be rock and soil that has, over time, been subject to erosion resulting in the need to have the area protected to prevent the further erosion and impact to the neighboring property.

In addition, erosion has been observed on a small peninsula on the northern boundary of the harbour near the exit to the Detroit River This erosion appears to have caused significant damage to the embankment in that area and now poses a potential threat to infrastructure (sidewalk and light-standard) near the shoreline.

The remaining outcrop is dredgeate from the historical construction activities and thus will be characterized to ensure suitable management. Furthermore, mitigation measures will be developed and implemented in order to protect potentially impacted SAR species and habitat (i.e. Northern Madtom).
