Contrecœur Port Terminal Expansion Project

The Montreal Port Authority proposes the construction of a container port terminal with a maximum annual capacity of 1.15 million containers on its property located in Contrecœur, approximately 40 kilometres downstream from Montreal. The project would include the construction of a 675-metre dock for two berths to accommodate vessels between 39,000 and 75,400 deadweight tonnage (DWT). The project would also include a seven track classification yard, a container storage and handling area, an intermodal rail yard, support facilities, rail and road accesses and a truck control area.

Latest update

September 25, 2026 — The public comment period on the draft amendments to the decision statement closed on September 4, 2026. The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada is considering comments received. The Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature will issue to the proponent an amended Environmental Assessment Decision Statement with reasons and enforceable conditions, should the revised project be allowed to proceed.
