East Block Exterior Lighting

The East Block (EB) Exterior Lighting Project provides improved nighttime façade illumination for the lighting design concept titled "Jewels in the Night" as described in the Parliamentary Precinct Exterior Lighting Master Plan with modern energy efficient LED lighting components and controls for this iconic Parliament Hill building in harmony with the West Block (WB) Exterior Lighting Project and the Centre Block (CB) Rehabilitation Project. The project scope focuses on the 1867 Wing including the west, south and partial east facades, including the towers. New lighting is not proposed on the north façade or the east façade of the 1910 Wing to avoid conflicts with the CB Rehabilitation and VWCC Projects and to limit the total project costs, since some of the exterior lighting will be replaced as part of the EB Phase 2 Rehabilitation Project, scheduled to start the fall of 2027 until the fall of 2034. The majority (estimated as 80%) of the new façade lighting, will be provided from a new continuous stepped granite curb with a gravel apron surrounding the building perimeter to provide horizontal and vertical façade graze lighting as well as the first and second storey window reveal graze lighting. The balance of the new lighting fixtures will be discretely mounted to the building, e.g. along window ledges and on the roofs so not to be obviously noticeable.
