Storm Sewer Rehabilitation: Blackburn Hamlet Bypass and Renaud Road

Project Purpose            

The City of Ottawa has identified two sites with storm sewer assets in the Blackburn Hamlet area which have reached the end of their service life and are in need of replacement. The infrastructure requiring replacement is critical to road, channel, and sewer stabilization. Impacts to the surrounding streets, neighbourhoods, and the environment are expected to be minor.

Project Summary           

Site 1 is located south of the Blackburn Hamlet Bypass, 300 m east of Innes Rd, within Ottawa Ward 2. At this site the deteriorated concrete headwall will be replaced in-kind. This headwall serves as the outlet for a storm sewer network serving 27 ha of Blackburn Hamlet residential neighborhoods. The headwall is concrete wall that allows water to outlet without destabilizing the embankments. Stormwater flows from Mud Creek, drain into Green's Creek, and ultimately the Ottawa River. In addition to the new headwall, a new retaining wall, ground stabilization, and embankment protection along the outlet channel will minimize the impact of the stormwater flows from this network. For soil stabilization, the retaining wall will be expanded onto NCC property, however, NCC property vegetation will be minimally impacted by this project. The expected impact to the vegetation is grass/overgrowth removal and grass replacement. The duration of construction at this site is expected to be 4 weeks.

Site 2 is located along Renaud Road, approximately 1.1 km east of Anderson Road, also within Ottawa Ward 2. At this site, three deteriorated sewer crossings beneath Renaud Road will be replaced by one larger sewer pipe with a length of 18.5 m crossing beneath the road. This sewer crossing will continue to provide drainage for 44 ha of land southwest of the crossing and the roadside ditches. Two of the buried sewers upstream will be removed and replaced with new ditching. Flows will be directed across Renaud Rd and outlet to a north-side ditch with new embankment stabilization, prior to draining into Mud Creek. The construction is expected to be two weeks in duration, with one weekend closure to complete the road trench/sewer replacement and minor interruptions otherwise. There are no mature trees expected to be removed at this site. Stormwater flows from Mud Creek, drain into Green's Creek, and ultimately the Ottawa River.

Land authorities for project work are National Capital Commission and City of Ottawa.

 

Project Dates                

Construction will take place during the late summer/fall months of 2020, with an anticipated start date September 1, 2020 and completion date prior to the end of November 2020.
