Renovation of the Des Seigneurs Bridge

The Des Seigneurs Bridge, built in 1898, is located very close to Lock #3. It connects two major thoroughfares running parallel to the Lachine Canal's main navigation channel in the Sud-Ouest borough: Notre-Dame Street (to the north) and Saint-Patrick Street (to the south). Since its construction, the bridge has undergone several improvements, such as the addition of a bike path on the upstream side and various rehabilitation projects over the years. However, it is in an advanced state of deterioration and requires reconstruction work to be planned before certain structural elements fail. The project aims to rehabilitate the Des Seigneurs Bridge to ensure the safety of vehicles using the bridge by restoring the bridge's legal load-bearing capacity in accordance with standards, replacing the deck—which has reached the end of its useful life—and bringing the guardrails up to standard to accommodate users (cyclists and pedestrians). 1) Reinforcements to the steel structure of the Des Seigneurs Bridge. 2) The deck of the Des Seigneurs Bridge. 3) The structure and surface of the bike path. 4) Upgrading the guardrails to meet current standards.

Latest update

August 28, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until September 27, 2026 respecting that determination.
