Stabilization of the banks of Lavoir Creek

During the damage caused by the torrential rains associated with Hurricane Debby in 2024, sandbags were urgently installed to stabilize a section of the banks of Lavoir Creek in the Forge Haute sector of the Forges-du-Saint-Maurice NHS. These sandbags have reached the end of their lifespan and are at risk of deteriorating in the near future. This could lead to increased sediment input into the creek and weaken the stabilization structure. To provide temporary protection for the banks until a permanent solution is implemented, plans are in place to replace the sandbags with a concrete mat. This solution is effective and durable, as it offers greater resistance to weather conditions and erosion. The work will secure the stream banks while providing more adequate protection for the heritage remains. It is also possible that a section located upstream of the work zone—at the junction with the Haut Fourneau Canal—may need to be stabilized, depending on how the situation develops and the project timeline. The planned work involves: Draining the stream during construction. Manually removing sandbags and installing interlocking concrete pavers. Movement of heavy machinery and vehicles (crane, excavator, transport truck, telehandler). Placing sandbags on pallets for transport. Temporary storage of concrete slabs prior to installation. The upstream diversion channel will be used to divert the stream during construction.
