Conservation work on the right flank of the St-Jean Bastion, Quebec

In order to conserve the cultural resource that is the St. John Bastion, which is part of the national historic site of the Fortifications of Quebec, work must be undertaken. The work involves the complete dismantling of the stone facing on Richelieu Street, from the first embrasure located east of the right shoulder to the entrance of the Artillery Park. In addition to the complete dismantling of the facing, approximately 600 mm of the core will be removed and replaced by a new masonry matrix. During the reassembly of the facing, stones showing advanced signs of degradation (e.g., cracking or severe delamination) will be replaced with equivalent stones, while the balance of the stones will be repositioned in their original locations. During the reassembly, modern engineering measures will be put in place to ensure durability over time, while respecting cultural resource management guidelines, such as the installation of reinforcing rods and a waterproofing system at the back of the wall. In order for the work to proceed safely, soils will need to be excavated from behind the wall to reduce the loads on the structure. The soils will be stored on-site for reuse during backfilling; in the case of a surplus quantity at the end of the work, it will be managed according to the regulations in effect. Finally, a temporary ramp of clean granular material will be built at the beginning of the work to allow the excavation work to be carried out; the land will be reshaped at the end of the work. The work will be monitored by cultural resources, environmental and engineering experts. The work is scheduled to be completed in 2022.
