Conservation work on a section of fortification wall, Quebec City

To ensure the safety and conservation of this cultural resource, masonry work will have to be carried out on a southern section of the wall along 57b St-Louis, which is part of the national historic site of the Fortifications of Quebec. The work will involve the complete dismantling of the section of fortification wall and courtyard wall overlooking the future Jardins du Corps-de-Garde city park, currently left vacant. Soil will have to be excavated behind the wall to reduce loads on the structure and allow access to the bedrock at its base. During excavation work, archaeological monitoring is planned right down to the base of the fortification wall. When reassembling the facing, stones showing advanced signs of deterioration (e.g. cracking or severe delamination) will be replaced by stones of equivalent type and size. During reassembly, modern engineering measures such as the installation of reinforcing rods, a waterproofing system at the back of the wall and a crown at the top of the wall will be put in place to ensure the structure's longevity over time. Excavated soil will be stored on site for reuse when backfilling the excavation; if there is a surplus at the end of the work, it will be managed in accordance with current regulations. Temporary ramps or platforms for excavation equipment and clean granular materials will be built at the start of work to allow machinery to circulate and materials to be transported. A temporary shelter will be built for winter work progress. Finally, the site will be restored to its original state at the end of the work. The work as a whole will ensure the stability of the structure and extend its lifespan, while contributing to the safety of future park users. The work will be monitored by experts in cultural resources, in environment and in engineering. Work is scheduled for completion in fall 2025.
