Reinforcement and Painting of Spans 27–31 of the Honoré Mercier Bridge

The Honoré Mercier Bridge spans the St. Lawrence River and Seaway, between Kahnawà:ke and the west side of the Island of Montréal. Built in 1933, it is made up of several sections. Sections 1 to 4 have been the responsibility of The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) since 1998. The Corporation reports to Parliament via the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure.

The aim of the project is to extend the service life of the deck on section 1 of the Honoré Mercier Bridge. More specifically, the work includes, without limitation:

  • reinforcing the steel structure of five spans, namely 27-28, 28-29, 29-30, and 30-31;
  • replacing the paint on span 27-28;
  • modifying the drainage systems between axes 27 and 28;
  • modifying the bridge bearing housings at axis 28.

The painting and steel reinforcement work will require partial or full lane closures to limit loads while replacing certain elements. JCCBI will plan and carry out the work in a way that minimizes impacts on traffic, to the extent possible and subject to safety requirements and the site's operational constraints.

Temporary structures, specifically work platforms, will be required for the steel work to be carried out between axes 27 to 31. The complete replacement of the protective cover on span 27-28 will require containment structures.

Work under span 27-28 will run from 2026 to 2032 and will be carried out during the period the St. Lawrence Seaway is closed, from January to March of each year.

This maintenance and rehabilitation project is part of JCCBI's mission to ensure user mobility, safety, and longevity of the infrastructure by promoting a systemic management approach grounded in sustainable development.

September 2nd, 2026 – The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) and Transport Canada (TC) intend to determine whether the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
