Polly Creek Ecopassage Phase 2 – Ecopassage and Fencing

An ecopassage, along with wildlife fencing, will be installed in the Polly Creek area in the fall of 2027. This area is part of the ecologically significant Jones Creek watershed and is located next to the Highway 401 on County Road 5 near the entrance of the Wolf Trail in Thousand Islands National Park. The project focuses on improving wildlife connectivity and reducing road mortality near the Polly Creek culvert, which crosses an important wetland habitat supporting species at risk. The ecopassage will be 1.8m high x 3.6m wide, allowing for the passage of species as large as medium-sized mammals (e.g., deer, bobcats). Fencing (1m-1.5m in height) will be installed adjacent to the ecopassage on both the east and west side of County 5 to guide animals to the ecopassage and reduce wildlife mortality and vehicle damage. Throughout construction of the ecopassage, traffic will be reduced to a single lane during the approximately month-long project. Project designs are being finalized this fall, with procurement and construction anticipated for summer-fall 2027.
