Burritts Rapids Dam Access Road Maintenance

Parks Canada is intending to perform activities to maintain the dam access road between Grenville Street (at the Burritts Rapids swing bridge) and the dam on the west side of Burritts Rapids island. The Tip to Tip trail runs along the dam access road for the length of the road. The eastern half of this length of road is on the earthen dam and the western half on the natural shoreline. The scope of work includes the removal of vegetation 5 ft. from the centrepoint of the trail/road in order to maintain access for the work trucks and equipment required for dam adjustments and repairs. The current road conditions do not allow access for the heavier equipment needed. The scope of work also includes trimming low hanging branches that are over the road up to about 15 to 20 ft. high and the addition of gravel to the road surface in order to repair some large potholes and ensure minimal regrowth in newly cleared areas. The scope of work also includes minor earth dam repair on a narrow section about 20-30 ft. in length that shows signs of erosion, with the objective to maintain a minimum width of road bed. This work will entail placing layers of geotextile, bedding material and 10-20" riprap onto the surface of the earth dam. The likely timing of this project is early-mid November.
