Confederation Bridge Replacement, Smiths Falls, Ontario

The Confederation Drive Pedestrian Bridge Project will replace an existing steel truss vehicle bridge, which was taken out of service in 2015. The bridge will span a by-pass segment of the Rideau Canal, adjacent to the Combined Lockstation in the Town of Smiths Falls, Ontario. The new bridge will provide a vital active transportation link between Centennial and Veteran's Memorial Parks which are considered central destinations for the Town's residents and tourists alike.

The replacement bridge will be a clear span bridge over the canal, with a length of approximately 50 m. The new concrete abutments will be installed on land behind the existing abutments, and there will be no new in-water footprint. The bridge is envisioned to integrate within the historical context of the Rideau Canal, considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century. The proposed construction timeline has the concrete abutments being installed in late fall of 2024 and the remainder of the bridge construction to occur in 2025.
