Refurbishment of Lachine Canal - Spillway 2

Parks Canada wishes to repair spillway 2 of the Lachine Canal. The project foresees work mainly on the structure. Among other things, it is planned to remove the knife gate valves, replace the footbridge, raise the overhanging ridge, demolish shotcrete, clean and repaint certain components, stabilize the soil by injection as well as repointing of masonry and repairs by extra thickness of wall sections. Some electrical interventions are also necessary, such as replacing the lights under the gangway.

The work requires excavating a portion of the sediment at the base of the walls. The excavated material will be replaced by a layer of sand and a layer of stone. It is also planned to replace the stone blocks downstream of the threshold with a concrete protection slab and a riprap section. These interventions will lead to a modification of the substrate. Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be consulted for this work.

The work is scheduled for the fall, after the navigation season. The work will be carried out dry, following the lowering of the canal for the winter season.
