NAV CAN camera mast

NAV CANADA has a new Digital Facility strategic initiative that will transform how air traffic services (ATS) are delivered at many airports across Canada over the next 15-20 years, driving greater resiliency and sustainability. It is being implemented through the Digital Aerodrome Air Traffic Services (DAATS) program with the goal of providing ATS to aircraft operators as they receive today but from a location independent of an airport leveraging various sensor technologies installed at the airport.

NAV CANADA, in coordination with Ottawa International Airport Authority, is proposing to construct a camera mast site located airside of the Ottawa International Airport (CYOW). An approximately 625-sq metre site footprint airside will provide space for a hybrid steel-concrete camera mast structure (approximately 30-metre AGL with 22-meter platform height and another 6-to-8-metre above the platform for sensors and lightning rod) and a fibreglass equipment shelter beside the mast base. This mast site will serve as a key component of the DAATS program long-term supporting operational setups at other airports by serving as a template setup, allowing sensor technology / operational procedure research and development, testing and validating future hardware / software releases prior to operational deployment at other airports, addressing issues / deficiencies discovered over the course of the DAATS program, etc.
