Address Deficiencies in the 25 kV Medium Voltage Electrical Installation - Macoun Centre

The project aims to address deficiencies in the 25 kV medium voltage electrical installation at the Macoun Centre at 1770 Pink Road, Gatineau, Quebec.

Construction Activities:

The recommended approach is as follows:

  • Improve Overhead Line and Wood Poles: This consists of repairing and reinforcing (e.g., doubling) certain existing wood poles that are still in good condition, while completely replacing others that should not be retained. It also involves replacement of overhead wiring on the medium‑voltage service entrance network.
  • Replace Transformers: This involves removing the two existing old oil transformers and replacing them with a new 1 MVA @ 25/12.5 kV dry transformer that will be mounted on a newly installed concrete pad, within a weatherproof NEMA 3R enclosure located outside near the existing transformers. This will eliminate the current risk of oil leaks and environmental impact. This upgrade will include stepping down the current medium voltage 25 kV transformer to a low voltage 12.5 kV transformer. The existing outdoor electrical substation would be removed after commissioning of the new 25 kV transformer.

It is expected that work will be done primarily with equipment such as bucket trucks, all-terrain vehicles and heavy machinery. Slight power interruption during repairs on the 25 kV network will be necessary, requiring generator power during the work.
