Earth dam Maintenance - Swing Bridge to Burritts Rapids Lockstation, Burritts Rapids, ON

Parks Canada intends to undertake maintenance of the earth dam on Burritts Rapids island, between Grenville Street (at the Burritts Rapids swing bridge) and Burritts Rapids lockstation on the east side of the island. The eastern portion of the Tip to Tip trail runs along the crest of the earth dam and Parks Canada uses the trail for periodic vehicular access to the north side of the lockstation. This access is currently impeded by vegetation growth and eroded sections of earth dam which have narrowed the crest of the dam. In order to maintain the earth dam and restore access, this project has the two-fold goal of conducting vegetation clearing and repairing the eroded sections of earth dam. This is seen as an interim project to maintain the earth dam before the full restoration in about five year's time. There is a population of Butternut (Juglans cinerea; endangered status) growing on this portion of the island that will be protected.
