Town of Banff Sulphur Mountain Pipeline and Kootenay Pumphouse Replacement

The Town of Banff water services is proposing a new water pipeline to service upper Sulphur Mountain (gondola, hot pools, Rimrock), as well as the replacement of the current pumphouse close to Kootenay Ave. The Town is requesting to install the new watermain adjacent to the existing right of way (ROW) (Fortis Power lines) by widening it permanently by 10 meters (20 m during project, 10 m to be reclaimed afterward). This will allow them to maintain the current water supply to downstream users (PCA, Rimrock, Pursuit), and maintain safe distances from the current ATCO gas line. The pipeline will be installed by open trench for 90% of it's length (the safest method due to other buried utilities), and horizontal directional drilling where open trench is not safe/feasible. The new pipeline will tie into the existing Sulphur Mountain Reservoir located up slope from the PCA Upper Hot Springs. The existing water main will be abandoned in place. The existing Pump Station will be demolished once the new potable main and respective pump station are commissioned. The temporary construction workspace and new pipeline easement will be remediated after completion of pipeline. The Kootenay pump house will be replaced with a new building.

Latest update

July 20 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until August 19 2026 respecting that determination.
