Johnston Canyon Rock and Soil Slope Remediation and Pier Repairs

Parks Canada is proposing rock and soil slope remediation along the Johnston Canyon Trail, which is part of an ongoing rockfall hazard management program and is intended to reduce rockfall-related safety risks to trail users. Remediation will include scaling, rock and debris removal, localized tree removal, rock bolts, rock dowels, and inspection/retightening of existing rock bolts. Work is also proposed at Catwalk 7 to repair deteriorated approach support piers. The repairs will address the poor condition of four support piers, including exposed and undermined aged concrete foundations and interim stacked-timber shoring installed by Parks Canada in 2025. The repair work is expected to include temporary shoring, removal or rehabilitation of damaged concrete support elements, subgrade stabilization, rock anchors, shallow concrete foundations, reinstatement of embankment fill, and improved pier/anchor connections.
