ʔaq̓am Northeast Cluster Clean Drinking Water Project

The ʔaq̓am Community is proposing to extend its existing drinking water distribution system on Kootenay #1 Reserve, located approximately 9 km north of Cranbrook, British Columbia. The proposed extension will provide treated drinking water to existing and future homes in the northeast portion of the community.

Specifically, the Project will extend the existing watermain by installing approximately 4.3 km of new 200-millimetre-diameter watermain from Lot 31 to properties along Birdstone, Casmer, and Pauls Roads. The new watermain will provide service connections to eight properties.

Of the total 4.3 km watermain length, approximately 1,508 m will run parallel to existing roads, while approximately 2,820.5 m will be located within road allowances and proposed rights-of-way where no existing road is present.

Construction will involve open-cut trench excavation, installation of underground watermain and service connections, and reclamation and revegetation of areas temporarily disturbed during construction. The proposed alignment primarily follows existing roads to minimize disturbance to surrounding vegetation and properties.

The project area consists of grasslands, open forests and other vegetated habitats within the St. Mary River valley. The proposed alignment will  avoid wetlands and surface waterbody crossings.

Measures to minimize potential environmental effects during construction will include habitat avoidance and pre-construction wildlife assessments, and disturbed areas will be restored.
