Waterton Lakes National Park Compost Facility

Parks Canada is proposing to construct a compost facility in Waterton Lakes National Park to assist in diverting organic waste generated in the park from the regional landfill. A prefabricated enclosed composting unit will be installed in the Parks Canada upper compound adjacent to the park's water treatment facility. The in-vessel composting system will be capable of processing approximately 15 cubic meters of organic waste per week and will reduce the park's greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transport of waste to landfills. The resulting compost will be used in restoration and landscaping projects within the park. Other project components include the construction of a concrete pad to provide a stable platform and liner for the composting operation, and a fence will be installed around the facility to prevent wildlife access.
