Heartland Petrochemical Complex Rail Yard Project

Inter Pipeline Propylene Limited is proposing the construction and operation of a rail yard located north of Fort Saskatchewan, within Alberta's Industrial Heartland. As proposed, the Heartland Petrochemical Complex Rail Yard Project would include 26 onsite rail tracks totaling up to 11 kilometres in length, loading, storage and cleaning facilities, and rail connections to allow for the transportation of polypropylene pellets to domestic and international markets. The rail yard and associated infrastructure is anticipated to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days per year to match the expected Heartland Petrochemical Complex schedule. The railcar storage area will provide rail infrastructure able to support the loading of up to 24 cars per day, and the storage of up to 200 railcars. Once constructed, the project site is expected to occupy an area of approximately 10 hectares.

Note this project was formerly known as the North American Polypropylene Rail Yard Project. It was proposed in May 2016 by North American Polypropylene ULC and acquired by Inter Pipeline Propylene Limited in September 2016.

August 7, 2018 - Following review of a project description submitted by the proponent, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency determined that the project is the same designated project and the Agency's decision issued on July 14, 2016 continues to apply.

July 14, 2016 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency issued its environmental assessment determination and decided that an environmental assessment of the designated project is not required.
