Heartland Petrochemical Complex Rail Yard Project

Inter Pipeline Propylene Limited is proposing the construction and operation of a rail yard located north of Fort Saskatchewan, within Alberta's Industrial Heartland. As proposed, the Heartland Petrochemical Complex Rail Yard Project would include 26 onsite rail tracks totaling up to 11 kilometres in length, loading, storage and cleaning facilities, and rail connections to allow for the transportation of polypropylene pellets to domestic and international markets. The rail yard and associated infrastructure is anticipated to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days per year to match the expected Heartland Petrochemical Complex schedule. The railcar storage area will provide rail infrastructure able to support the loading of up to 24 cars per day, and the storage of up to 200 railcars. Once constructed, the project site is expected to occupy an area of approximately 10 hectares.

Note this project was formerly known as the North American Polypropylene Rail Yard Project. It was proposed in May 2016 by North American Polypropylene ULC and acquired by Inter Pipeline Propylene Limited in September 2016.

North American Polypropylene ULC proposed the construction and operation of a rail yard located north of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. As proposed, the North American Polypropylene Rail Yard Project would have included 15 to 25 new rail tracks totaling up to 14 kilometres in length, to allow for the transportation of polypropylene pellets to domestic and international markets. The railcar storage area would have provided rail infrastructure able to support the loading of up to 25 cars per day. Once constructed, the project site was expected to occupy an area of approximately 11.5 hectares.
