The Proposed Project

Leduc County proposes to construct a fire station on Edmonton International Airport (YEG) lands that will support YEG, Queen Elizabeth II Highway and Nisku Business Park with a 24/7 fire crew.

The fire station will be located at the Edmonton International Airport on 1.09 acres of land. The building is planned to be approximately 28 feet in height and cover approximately 15,000 square feet. 7,268 square feet will be used to house fire apparatus with the remaining being used for general office space and firefighter living space. There will be 20 to 30 parking stalls on a paved parking lot that is included in the overall 1.09 acres. The entire footprint for the project is located on previously disturbed lands. There will be no significant waste or noise generated by the facility. When the facility is completed, it is expected to employ five staff per shift on a full-time basis operating seven days per week.

During the course of construction, there will be added traffic, large trucks and equipment generating construction-related noise. Noise generated is not predicted to create impacts as the project site is surrounded by commercial development at the airport. The construction period at the beginning of May 2023 is not anticipated to last longer than 10 months, after which there should be little impact on the land and surrounding area.
