Powerline Biofuel Removal - Reducing Wildfire Risks for Kouchibouguac National Park and Neighbouring Communities

Kouchibouguac National Park is planning to clear excess vegetation overgrowth along the transmission line corridor that is currently posing potential risk of wildfires and damage to powerlines. The project will cover the entire length of the Kouchibouguac National Park's overhead powerline infrastructure (roughly 11 km). The transmission line currently provides power to the South Kouchibouguac campground, Kellys Beach canteen, Loggiecroft Warf and Côte-à-Fabien campground.

Work is set to take place in late 2024 and early 2025 during the off season and once the ground is frozen. A mulching tractor will be used to remove excess ground vegetation along the original corridor and all overhanging branches and or trees that pose an impact to the powerlines will be cleared using specialized equipment. Trees located outside the original corridor that pose potential future risk to the powerlines will also be removed via chainsaws. Following cutting, all downed trees and large branches will be removed and used for internal purposes (i.e., firewood) and all mulched materials which will be left on site.

August 22, 2024 – The public comment period on the project is closed. Parks Canada is considering comments received to help inform its determination on whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
