Securing the Cap-d'Espoir Lighthouse Site

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) plans to carry out renovation and demolition work on certain infrastructures to secure the site of the lighthouse station.

Concrete fragments are detaching from the upper part of the lighthouse crown and falling to the ground. Additionally, a shed on the site has been severely damaged by the wind, and a concrete slab leading to an underlying basement has openings and numerous cracks.

The work will include repairing the concrete on the upper part of the lighthouse, as well as dismantling the shed, which poses a risk of collapse. The adjacent concrete slab, also at risk of collapse, will be removed. Two steel buildings, in a state of advanced deterioration, will also be demolished. Materials and debris from these demolitions will be transported to a site authorized by the Government of Quebec. No excavation is planned as part of this project.

The DFO will also undertake the removal of contamination sources present on the site. The exterior paint of the lighthouse and some other buildings contains lead. Paint chips are detaching from the structure and contaminating the surrounding soil. This paint will be removed by scraping the exterior surfaces of the affected structures, which will then be repainted.

An environmental impact assessment is currently underway.
