Nashwaak Fish Counting Station Access Road Repair and Upgrade

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) intends to complete repairs and upgrades to the existing access road serving the Nashwaak Fish Counting Station located at 1280 Route 148, New Brunswick.

The existing unpaved access road traverses predominantly wetland terrain and is subject to seasonal flooding, surface water flow, and significant washouts. Several sections of the road are approaching impassable conditions for passenger vehicles due to erosion and inadequate drainage .

The proposed project includes:

  • Regrading of the existing roadway to improve profile and drainage;
  • Installation of a geogrid-reinforced roadway structure
  • Construction of drainage ditches to lower the water table and improve road performance;
  • Installation of multiple culverts (HDPE) to accommodate seasonal and stormwater flows;
  • Placement of embankment fill;
  • Installation of geotextile beneath embankments where required;
  • Installation of two swing gates to restrict public access to the fish counting station;
  • Associated works including clearing, grubbing, erosion control, and site stabilization.

The project is designed to improve safe access while minimizing impacts to surrounding wetlands. However, some permanent footprint within wetland areas is anticipated, and compensation measures may be required .

Construction activities will involve earthworks, excavation, placement of fill materials, and water management measures. Temporary groundwater and surface water infiltration is expected during construction and will be managed through appropriate drainage controls.

August 20, 2026 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is inviting public comments until September 20, 2026 respecting that determination.
