St. Andrews Biological Station Temporary Well Access Construction

The St. Andrews Biological Station is a scientific marine research station located on the shores of the Passamaquoddy Bay, an extension the Bay of Fundy, in the Town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The Station contains extensive saltwater wet laboratories that are provided a steady source of saltwater from a wet-well located adjacent to the Stations'wharf. The continued maintenance and operation of the wet-well is vital to the research facility, and any interruption in service of the well could have severe detrimental impacts to the daily operations. A structural assessment of the wharf has indicated that it is unsafe for use by heavy equipement and/or machinery  that is needed to maintain or repair the wet-well. There are preliminary plans to reconstruct the wharf, however the reconstruction project will take several years to complete, therefore a temporary structure to access the wet-well, until the wharf is reconstructed, is required.

In order to provide access to the wet-well, the St. Andrews Biological Station is proposing to construct a temporary steel trestle structure that will extend from the shoreline to the edge of the wet-well pumphouse. The new structure will run parallel to the existing wharf. It will be approximately 45m long by 6m wide and will be supported (in water) by ten 24" diameter steel pipe piles. The trestle will be secured to the shore on concrete abutments, to be installed above the high water mark. Once constructed, the trestle will provide sufficient access to the wet-well for maintenance / repair equipment from the shore
