Above Ground Power Line Installation

The underground power lines that service the Visitor Centre and the Campground at Kejimkujik need to be upgraded to operate Level 3 electric vehicle charging stations. The lines will be installed above ground and they will replace the direct buried cables and padmount transformers that are currently feeding the Visitor Centre and Jeremy's Bay Campground. The work will consist of three phases:
Phase 1 – Vegetation clearing to create a 30 ft wide corridor (15 ft on each side of the power lines) corridor. To be completed by the assets team at Kejimkujik.
Phase 2 – Removal of obsolete power poles. Two (2) near the Visitor Centre (Fig. 1) and one (1) near the Campground Kiosk (Fig.2). To be completed by Nova Scotia Power.
Phase 3 – Installation of new power poles and lines. Eight (8) new poles around the Visitor Centre and three (3) new poles around the Campground Kiosk. To be completed by Nova Scotia Power.
The work will take place outside the migratory bird nesting season (January 2024 – April 15th, 2025). Vegetation clearing will be completed with handheld chainsaws with the exception of three (3) trees that need to be removed with the help of a backhoe as they are located near a brook. Vegetation clearing will not be used for digging or cause ground disturbance. Rare lichen and black ash surveys were completed in the spring of 2024 around the Visitor Centre and surveys in the Campground Kiosk area remain to be completed prior to any vegetation removal.  The estimated footprint of the clearing is as follows:

(Width of the clearing: 15 ft on each side of the poles for a total of 30 ft (9.1 m) right-away.

Area around the Visitor Centre: 20 m x 9.1 m = 188 m2
Area around the Campground Kiosk: 150 m x 9.1 m = 1,365 m2

Key decision-making information:
This project entails a physical activity, with a defined beginning and end, taking place on a Parks Canada administered property. The project is therefore subject to the Impact Assessment Act (2019) and the terms of Parks Canada Directive on Impact Assessment. The proposed physical activity consists of a new footprint for the installation of above ground power lines. The proposed location will take place in Zone IV of the Management Plan described as an area that supports intensive infrastructure. Archaeological testing is required prior to pole installation as requested by KMKNO (October 2024).
