Jakes Landing Retaining Wall and Dock Rehabilitation Project

The retaining wall adjacent to the Boat House at Jakes Landing has reached the end of its useful life as existing materials appear to be significantly rotted. This as a result has become a safety concern. The retaining wall serves not only to inhibit erosion of the boathouse foundation, but also as an anchor point for several gangways that lead to the operational docks for Parks Canada boats including the rescue lifeboat. The objective of this project is to remove the existing wall and all associated materials and rebuild a new wall with precast concrete blocks. The wall would be topped with lumber to create a walking platform across the top to allow access to the gangways and docks. The total length of the area of disturbance will measure 21 meters, starting at the south corner of the boathouse and reaching 20 meters upstream. The method of construction would be to demolish the existing wall using hand tools and machinery as necessary. Debris would be transported to the local landfill for proper disposal. Using the existing footprint, the area would be leveled and washed 3-inch stone would be placed on the shoreline to create a stable foundation to place the concrete blocks. Once in place, the blocks would be filled with the same ¾ stone. The wooden walkway and railing would be constructed on top of the concrete blocks and a new docking system would be anchored to the concrete blocks to address the safety concerns surrounding the instability of the current fastening to the rotten wall.
