Restoration of Canning Field Road

A 2km gravel road with ingrown needs to be restored to a safe, serviceable condition. The parks Canada assets team will clear the adjacent road vegetation in the fall of 2026. The grading and roadbed restoration work will be contracted out and it will consist of the following: 
1. Road Grading
• Grade the full length (approximately 2 km) of the gravel road.
• Restore the road profile to promote positive surface drainage by establishing an appropriate crown and eliminating low spots, potholes, wash boarding, and other surface irregularities.
• Shape the road to ensure water is directed away from the travelled surface and does not pond on the roadway.
2. Roadbed Restoration
• Re-establish the existing roadbed by reclaiming and reshaping suitable existing road materials.
• Any organic material encountered during grading, including sod, vegetation, roots, topsoil, or other unsuitable materials brought to the surface, shall be removed from the roadway and properly disposed of off the travelled surface.
• Organic materials shall not be buried within the reconstructed roadbed.
3. Supply and Placement of Aggregate
• Supply and deliver approximately 150 cubic yards of Class A aggregate.
• Spread and uniformly distribute the aggregate over the road in locations necessary to restore the driving surface and maintain the required road profile.
• Blend the new aggregate with the existing road material as required to achieve a consistent surface.
4. Compaction
• Following grading and placement of the new aggregate, compact the entire treated roadway using suitable compaction equipment.
• Compaction shall produce a firm, stable, and uniform driving surface free of rutting, loose material, or displacement.

Latest update

July 31, 2026 – Parks Canada intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Parks Canada is inviting public comments until August 30, 2026 respecting that determination.
