Bonaventure Expressway, Section 10: Box girder replacement, paving and repair of structural elements

Commissioned in 1967, the Bonaventure Expressway runs along the St. Lawrence River. It passes over industrial and port lands between the Samuel -De Champlain Bridge and downtown Montreal. It was built to provide direct access to downtown from southern areas of the city. The Bonaventure Expressway is 4.6 km long and encompasses roadway structures including overhead structures, non-elevated lanes, viaducts and the Clément Bridge.

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) plans to carry out major rehabilitation work on Section 10 of the Bonaventure Expressway. This work is part of JCCBI's commitment to ensuring the safety and long-term viability of its infrastructure.

The main aspects of the work include the following:

  • Replacement of the box girder deck in Segments 30 to 32 and 36 to 38
  • Repair of the piers in Segments 30, 31, 32, 36, 37 and 38, as well as Segments 44 to 54
  • Pavement resurfacing in Segments 26 to 44 and on Ramps C and D
  • Construction of two temporary ramps to maintain traffic flow
  • Other related work on lighting, intelligent transportation systems and the drainage system

In particular, the project will make the structural elements of elevated lanes more consistent and visually pleasing.

Work will begin in 2027 and continue for four years.

The strategically important area where the project will be carried out forms an isolated network experiencing urban renewal alongside new approaches to land use. Proactive stakeholder management efforts are underway to ensure effective coordination of work in the area.

Traffic flow will be maintained using dynamic lane management and quick-shift barriers, allowing for two lanes in the peak direction and one contraflow lane from April to December in 2028 and 2029.

Given the proximity of the elevated lanes to the Lachine Canal, measures will be implemented to manage suspended materials and safeguard fish habitats. Operation of the Canal spillway will be maintained.

This maintenance and refurbishment project reflects JCCBI's mission to support user mobility, safety and infrastructure sustainability through a systemic management approach focused on sustainable development.
