Space Weather Station – Ferguson's Cove

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project. DND intends to install four unoccupied Space Weather Stations consisting of one or more Transmit and/or Receive antennae, a small shelter in which to house the hardware, and a perimeter fence. They will form part of a network of such installations that will collectively measure real-time fluctuations in the ionosphere (i.e. space weather) in order to map it as a reflecting surface for high-frequency radio signals.

This information will be used as part of Canada's Arctic Over-The-Horizon Radar project.

Latest update

August 26, 2026 - The Department of National Defence intends to make a determination regarding whether the carrying out of the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, the Department of National Defence is inviting public comments until September 25, 2026 respecting that determination.
