Sturgeon Lake First Nation - East Lagoon Expansion

The Proposed Project

This project includes expansion of the existing east lagoon facility through construction of a new 4.07 ha. primary treatment cell in NW/NE 13 -51-01-W3M adjacent to the existing cells. The proposed cell will provide primary sewage treatment and the existing cells will be retained for wastewater storage. New cell construction will be conventional excavation and earthen berms with an HDPE synthetic liner system. Also included is extension of the existing forcemain piping, cell-to-cell transfer piping, a gravel access road, and perimeter fencing.

The existing east lagoon consists of two earth lined cells for wastewater treatment and storage. These cells will be retain and incorporated into the project for continued use as storage cells.

A new primary treatment cell will be constructed with earthen berms lined with continuous synthetic liner. Other permanent infrastructure include new forcemain piping, cell-to-cell transfer piping, a gravel access road, and perimeter fencing. No temporary infrastructure is anticipated.

Site survey work has been completed. Construction will consist of removal and stockpile of topsoil material; excavation and construction of cell embankments by conventional earthwork machinery; installation of the forcemain and transfer piping by conventional open trench excavation; supply and installation of the synthetic liner system, with protective earthen cover layer; replacement of topsoil on berm faces and seeding for vegetation growth. Upon completion, the existing sewage pumping infrastructure will begin depositing all wastewater to the new cell. Once full, the new cell will transfer wastewater to the existing cells via transfer piping. No decommissioning will be required. No waste is anticipated to be generated as a result of the project. No interruption to the service of the existing lagoon is anticipated.
